Sacraments at St. John’s

At St. John’s, we encounter God’s grace in word, prayer, worship, and the sacramental life of the Church. Whether you are marking a beginning, seeking healing, making a lifelong commitment, or preparing to commend a loved one to God, we are honoured to walk with you.

Please contact the parish office or clergy to begin a conversation about any of these ministries.

Holy Baptism

In Baptism, we are welcomed into the family of God and become members of Christ’s Body, the Church. Through water and prayer, we are marked as Christ’s own forever and begin—or renew—our journey of faith.

Baptism is offered for people of every age: infants, children, youth, and adults. For parents bringing a child for Baptism, and for adults preparing to be baptized, we offer a time of preparation and conversation so that this joyful step may be entered into thoughtfully and prayerfully.

Confirmation

Confirmation is an opportunity to make a mature and public affirmation of the promises made at Baptism. With prayer and the laying on of hands by the bishop, candidates are strengthened by the Holy Spirit for a life of Christian faith and service.

Confirmation may be especially meaningful for teenagers and adults who are ready to claim the Christian faith as their own. It is also available to those received from another Christian tradition or those wishing to reaffirm their baptismal commitment.

Holy Eucharist

The Holy Eucharist—also called Holy Communion or the Lord’s Supper—is at the heart of our common life at St. John’s. In this sacred meal, we gather around Christ’s table to give thanks, hear God’s Word, receive the bread and wine, and be nourished for lives of love and service.

All who seek to follow Jesus are welcome to receive Communion. Those who prefer not to receive are warmly invited to come forward for a blessing, or simply to remain seated in prayer.

Reconciliation

God’s forgiveness and mercy are always available to us. In times of spiritual burden, regret, or difficulty, private confession and reconciliation may offer a quiet and healing way to name what weighs upon us and receive the assurance of God’s pardon.

This ministry is confidential and available by appointment with the priest. It is never required, but it is offered as a pastoral gift for those who find it helpful.

Marriage

Christian marriage is a covenant of faithful love, made before God and witnessed by the community. At St. John’s, we rejoice with couples as they prepare to make their vows and begin—or bless—a shared life in Christ.

Couples seeking marriage are invited to contact the parish well in advance of their hoped-for date. Preparation includes conversation with the priest about the meaning of Christian marriage, practical arrangements for the service, and ways to make the day personal, prayerful, and joyful.

Ordination

In ordination, the Church sets apart women and men for particular ministries of leadership and service as bishops, priests, or deacons. These ministries exist to build up the whole Church in worship, mission, pastoral care, and service to the world.

If you sense God may be calling you to ordained ministry, please speak to the Rector. Discernment begins with prayer, conversation, and participation in the life of the Church.

Anointing and Healing

God meets us in times of illness, injury, uncertainty, and frailty. Through prayer and the laying on of hands, and sometimes through anointing with oil, the Church offers a ministry of healing, comfort, courage, and peace.

Prayer for healing is available for those facing illness, surgery, recovery, emotional distress, or the challenges of aging. This ministry does not promise a particular outcome; rather, it entrusts us to God’s compassionate care and sustaining grace. This sacrament is also made available on the 3rd Sunday of the month during both morning services.

Funerals at St. John’s

When someone dies, St. John’s is here to offer prayer, practical support, and the hope of the Christian faith. A funeral is a time to give thanks for a life, to grieve honestly, to commend the person who has died into God’s loving care, and to support one another in sorrow.

Our clergy will meet with family members to plan a service that is faithful, personal, and appropriate to the life of the person who has died. Together, we can choose readings, prayers, music, and words of remembrance that honour the deceased and offer comfort to those who mourn.

A funeral may take place at St. John’s, at a funeral home, graveside, or in another suitable setting. We can also assist with arrangements for memorial services, interment of ashes, and prayers at the time of death.

You do not need to be a current member of St. John’s to contact us in a time of loss. Please call the parish office or the Rector whenever you need support; we will do our best to walk with you.
